Today my friend asked me if I wanted to chat over lunch. The place we had chosen was Firehouse Subs which as many know is not known for their healthy sandwich options. In fact in most cases one sub can be more than one thousand calories. As an individual who prefers to eat healthier I wanted to choose something I would enjoy but would also be reasonable when considering calories. I ended up ordering the medium Turkey Bacon Ranch Sub. This sub normally comes with bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise, peppercorn ranch dressing, smoked turkey breast, and tomato all inside a sub roll. In order to reduce the amount of calories and fat consumed in one meal I chose to change it up a little. Instead of a white sub roll I ordered a whole wheat roll. I also removed the bacon and ranch option. Just by making small changes I was able to create a much healthier sandwich. During the visit to Firehouse Subs I was also able to practice portion control by only eating half of the sandwich and taking the rest home. Even though it may have not been the healthiest restaurant there are certainly ways to improve upon the foods they offer. Many times the restaurant staff are happy to make slight changes to the meal in order to satisfy the customer. Try it sometime!
This is what the sandwich looked like without the alterations. However, with the changes the sandwich was still delicious and a much healthier option.
